What is a sports physical?

A sports physical exam helps determine if it’s safe for you to participate in a particular sport or various athletic and physical activities. The team at Four Peaks Internal Medicine recommends getting a sports physical before you begin a new competitive season.

A sports physical is different from a standard physical because it focuses on your health as it relates to a specific sport. Your doctor performs many of the same evaluations as they do during a regular physical, but they also pay extra attention to any issues that may inhibit your athletic performance.

What happens during a sports physical?

During the exam, your doctor discusses your medical history, including family illnesses or hereditary conditions and previous childhood health issues you may have had. The doctors may ask questions about medications you are currently taking, if you’ve ever been hospitalized, and whether you have allergies or suffered past sports injuries. Your doctor may want to know if you are physically active and how often you exercise.

The physical exam includes recording your height, weight, and blood pressure and checking your heart and lungs. Your doctor may also evaluate your posture, flexibility, and range of motion in your joints. They look into your ears, nose, and throat and may also test your vision.

Why are sports physicals important?

Sports physicals are important because they can shed light on any pre-existing health issues that may prevent you from playing a sport. For example, if you have asthma, you may need prescription medication or an inhaler to keep it under control on the playing field. Additionally, your doctor can provide you with ways to keep yourself safe before, during, and after the game, such as stretches and strengthening exercises.

Another benefit of a sports physical is to help keep previous injuries, such as sprains or fractures, from recurring on the same ankle, knee, or wrist. You should discuss previous injuries with your doctor during your exam so they can help you prevent the same injury from happening this season.
